So I’ve been cast as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Opera Western Reserve. The first rehearsal is October 22. I’m, um, well…I’m not ready.
Apart from memorization, which has been a problem of mine for ten years now, I feel like I have a problem with my vocal folds. I noticed it this spring when I was the chorus for La Bohème. I can be as warmed up as I’m going to get, but I can’t seem to phonate on E♭ or E♮ above middle C.
I think it has to do with my horrible, horrible acid reflux. I have, on several occasions, had to jump out of bed because of stomach acid coming all the way up my esophagus. It’s like throwing up, but without all the heaving. And stomach acid on your vocal folds is no picnic.
For now, I’ll just have to work through it. As they say, the show must go on!
